JMH Blood Bank awards donor


ABINGDON, Va. –The Johnston Memorial Hospital (JMH) Blood Bank recently announced Sandy Landis of Marion as the winner of a Toshiba 32-inch flat-screen television, compliments of Sears in Abingdon.

Landis was awarded the TV after her name was drawn in a blood donor raffle. The raffle was open to community members and Mountain States Health Alliance team members who made blood donations at JMH blood drives or at the blood donor center between June and December 2011. Donors were entered one time for each blood donation made. The drawing was part of an ongoing effort to encourage new and repeat blood donors.

Individuals interested in making a blood donation are invited to participate in one of the local blood drives listed below or to make an appointment by calling the Blood Donor Center at 276-258-1710. In order to provide greater convenience for blood donors, the JMH Donor Center has adopted new extended hours. The donor center is now open from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays, 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday through Friday, and on the fourth Saturday of each month from 7 a.m. to noon.

  • Jan. 19, UPS, Bristol, Va., 5-7:30 p.m.
  • Jan. 24, Coomes Center, Abingdon, 2-6 p.m.
  • Jan. 26, Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Jan. 31, General Dynamics, Marion, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Healthy individuals who are ages 16 and older and weigh more than 120 pounds are eligible to donate blood. Healthy donors who are currently taking blood pressure or cholesterol medications are eligible. Diabetic donors are eligible if certain criteria such as blood glucose level and routine checks on glucose level are met. First-time donors age 65 or older must have permission from their doctors, ensuring that a blood donation will not compromise their health. Donors must provide valid identification, such as driver’s license or a donor card, must have eaten a meal within the last four hours and must be well and healthy. Donors who are 16 must have parental consent to donate. All blood types are needed.

JMH Blood Bank is the blood collection entity of Johnston Memorial Hospital, located in Abingdon. The JMH Blood Bank provides blood products to Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion and Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax.
