Johnson City Medical Center named one of "100 Hospitals and Health Systems with Great Oncology Programs"

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – In addition to recently being named by US News and World Report as one of the top ten hospitals in Tennessee, Johnson City Medical Center was recently named one of America’s “100 Hospitals and Health Systems with Great Oncology Programs” by Becker’s Hospital Review. Organizations on this year’s list were cited as leading the way in terms of quality patient care, cancer outcomes and research.
Along with other nationally recognized hospitals to be included, like Cleveland Clinic, Duke University Hospital, Wake Forest Baptist Hospital, Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and MD Anderson, three other hospitals in Tennessee were recognized, including Vanderbilt University Medical Center, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and University of Tennessee Medical Center.
Niswonger Children’s Hospital – a Mountain States Health Alliance facility, is affiliated with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, and Mountain States Health Alliance has an affiliation with Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
“Our doctors and staff are focused on providing the highest quality of care to our patients in a compassionate and loving environment,” said Tony Benton, interim CEO of Mountain States' Washington County, Tenn., hospitals. “We know when a patient chooses to use our services, it is a sacred trust, and we seek every day to be the best we can be.
“We are very proud that our partners at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital are also recognized as among the great cancer programs. We carefully choose our clinical partners based on their commitment to quality, and we are not surprised to see them on this list.”
While Johnson City Medical Center and its affiliated physicians have long been committed to high standards of quality, it is a journey that continues. Recently, an expanded and renovated radiation oncology center was unveiled to the community – a center that this winter will house the newest Elekta Versa HD Radiation System. This new system, the same system used by great cancer programs like John Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center and University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, allows oncologists to target cancer cells with pinpoint accuracy while minimizing damage to healthy tissue. The new radiation oncology center also features 19,000 additional square feet of space and 12 patient-friendly exam rooms, allowing greater capacity for scheduling appointments at times that are more convenient for patients.
The Becker’s Hospital Review editorial team selected hospitals for inclusion in their list of “100 Hospitals and Health Systems with Great Oncology Programs” based on rankings and awards they have received from a variety of reputable sources. The following awards are considered as part of the criteria for inclusion on the list: U.S. News & World Report cancer rankings, Truven Health Analytics, CareChex cancer care rankings, National Cancer Institute designations, the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer accreditations, American Nurses Credentialing Center designations, and awards and Blue Distinction Center recognition from the BlueCross BlueShield Association.
Johnson City Medical Center's Regional Cancer Center offers cancer care in affiliation with physicians at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City. Johnson City Medical Center was named one of America's Top Quality Hospitals for cancer care in 2014 by CareChex and is accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.
During the hospital’s most recent accreditation from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, JCMC had seven areas of commendation, including outcomes analysis, prevention and early detection, and adherence to guidelines from the College of American Pathologists. According to the American College of Surgeons Cancer Quality Improvement Program annual report, JCMC performed better than the regional average in all measures related to breast, colon and rectal cancers.
