ABINGDON, Va. – The new Johnston Memorial Hospital (JMH) will open its doors for public tours June 16 and 18, allowing local residents to take a peek at the inner workings of the facility before it opens to patients next month.
Tours will take place on Thursday, June 16 from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, June 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. JMH officials and team members will be on hand to answer questions and showcase some of the hospital’s finer points. Visitors will be allowed to view many departments that normally operate behind the scenes, like surgery, radiology and dietary. The new facility will officially open and begin accepting patients on July 16.
The new JMH campus, housed on 60 acres of land, includes the hospital, a medical office building and the Regional Cancer Center (completed in 2007). The entire construction project, including the cancer center, cost $176.5 million. Construction of the hospital and medical office building took 34 months to complete. The new JMH is the second green facility to be built by Mountain States Health Alliance (MSHA) and is designed to achieve Silver-level LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
The new hospital is located on Lee Highway between I-81 exits 19 and 22. For more information, call (276) 676-9550.
