Johnston Memorial recognizes Harner Memorial Scholarship recipient

ABINGDON, Va.Johnston Memorial Hospital has named Holly Elena Barfield of Glade Spring, Va., as the 2014 recipient of the John and Anna G. Harner Memorial Scholarship.

The children of John and Anna G. Harner established the scholarship in honor of their parents. The Harners were Abingdon natives who received the majority of their health care at Johnston Memorial Hospital.  Even after moving out of the community, they continued to travel back to the hospital for their health care needs because of the high quality, compassionate care they received.

The scholarship is a one-time, $1,000 grant given annually to a promising nursing student. The recipient must excel in academics and demonstrate all characteristics of a successful nurse: a caring attitude, compassion, kindness, knowledge, a strong work ethic and understanding. The student also must aspire to provide bedside care as a registered nurse at Johnston Memorial after graduation.

Barfield is studying to be a registered nurse (RN) at Virginia Highlands Community College (VHCC) and will graduate in the spring 2015.  She is currently on the Dean’s List and has been named to the Vice President and President’s lists during her academic career at VHCC.
