Smyth County Community Hospital brings oncology services closer to home

10/18/2011

MARION, Va. – Smyth County Community Hospital (SCCH) held an open house Wednesday, October 12 to introduce new oncology services. Oncology patients in Marion will now have the convenience of local clinic visits and chemo infusion services available full time Monday through Friday.

The oncology department at SCCH is staffed with one oncologist, Dr. Pooja Bardhan; an oncology nurse practitioner, Jessica Hill; and two chemo-certified registered nurses. Before this full-time service line was introduced at Smyth County in late August, oncology patients had to travel to facilities in other counties to receive treatment.

“It saves a lot of travel for the patients, and our patients are extremely happy to have this new service line available to them,” said Terry Smith, director of oncology services for SCCH and Johnston Memorial Hospital (JMH). “They are able to get their care here, close to home and in a facility they’re familiar with.”

Hospital officials also unveiled plans for the oncology unit at the new SCCH, coming in April 2012.

“We are looking forward to the move to the replacement hospital where we have dedicated space that we, with our providers and our team, have been able to design from the beginning, which is really, really exciting,” said Lindy White, Mountain States Health Alliance (MSHA) vice president and CEO of SCCH.
