Smyth County Community Hospital recognized for quality, patient safety
MARION, Va. – Smyth County Community Hospital (SCCH) was recently recognized by the Premier Healthcare Alliance for several key quality measures, including low readmission rates, positive patient experience, and low cost of care. SCCH was named a top performer in Premier’s QUEST: High Performing Hospitals collaborative for:
- Reducing mortality by at least 31 percent;
- Reducing the average cost of care to less than $5,690 per discharge;
- Reducing preventable harm events such as hospital acquired infections; and
- Reducing readmissions by at least 12 percent.
The QUEST High Performing Hospitals collaborative allows hospitals nationwide to share best practices and compare data on patient safety, clinical outcomes, cost of care, and patient satisfaction, with the goal of improving all metrics for the benefit of the patient. Participation in the collaborative is strictly voluntary.
“Smyth County Community Hospital’s participation in this collaborative reinforces our commitment to reliably deliver the best care experience to the communities we serve,” said Lindy White, CEO of SCCH. “We’re proud to have achieved top performance in QUEST as we continue down our path of improving patient outcomes. We could not have achieved this honor without the support of our medical staff and entire clinical team.”
In four and a half years, the 350 hospitals of the QUEST collaborative have saved nearly 92,000 lives and reduced health care spending by $9.1 billion through the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care. In addition:
- The observed mortality in member hospitals is 10 percent lower than national averages, and
- The cost of inpatient care at those hospitals is better controlled than other hospitals nationwide, with a growth of only 11 percent compared to 28 percent among their peers.
SCCH was one of 48 hospitals in the U.S. that received top-performer recognition from Premier this year.
“We chose to participate in the QUEST collaborative because we want to be proactive in providing the safest environment, best clinical care for our patients, along with the best value for their health care dollar,” said Tamera Parsons, MSHA’s vice president of quality and patient safety. “When we collaborate to share our patient outcomes data and best practices with other member hospitals, we are able to take the very best of what works nationwide and apply it here at home.”
