Sycamore Shoals Hospital recognized for quality, patient safety
ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. – Sycamore Shoals Hospital (SSH) was recognized this week by the Premier healthcare alliance for several key quality measures, including low mortality, positive patient experience, and low cost of care. SSH was named a top performer in Premier’s QUEST: High Performing Hospitals collaborative for:
- Reducing mortality by at least 31 percent;
- Reducing the average cost of care to less than $5,690 per discharge;
- Improving the hospital experience so that patients favorably rate their stay and would recommend the facility to others at least 73 percent of the time;
- Reducing preventable harm events; and
- Reducing readmissions by at least 12 percent.
The QUEST High Performing Hospitals collaborative allows hospitals nationwide to share best practices and compare data on patient safety, clinical outcomes, cost of care, and patient satisfaction, with the goal of improving all metrics for the benefit of the patient. Participation in the collaborative is strictly voluntary.

In four and a half years, the 350 hospitals of the QUEST collaborative have saved nearly 92,000 lives and reduced health care spending by $9.1 billion through the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care. In addition:
- The observed mortality in member hospitals is 10 percent lower than national averages, and
- The cost of inpatient care at those hospitals is better controlled than other hospitals nationwide, with a growth of only 11 percent compared to 28 percent among their peers.
