Tri-Cities RAM event serves more than 1,500 patients

Next event date tentatively set for May 2013

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Tri-Cities’ second Remote Area Medical® (RAM) clinic was a great success, according to event organizers, with a total of 1,584 patients seen over the three-day weekend. Patients from across the region came to Bristol Motor Speedway April 13, 14 and 15 for free medical, dental and vision care provided by professionals who volunteered their services.

Dentistry drew the largest crowd, with 95 percent of patients seeking dental care during the clinic. For those patients, volunteer dentists performed 2,107 tooth extractions, 376 fillings and 128 cleanings. Vision was the second most popular service at the clinic; 587 pairs of glasses were received by patients, nearly all of which were made on site in RAM’s mobile vision unit. The clinic also provided 52 hearing aids, 44 mammograms and 272 general medical exams. The total value of the services provided is estimated at $575,199.00.

“We were thrilled at the number of people we were able to care for this year,” said Helen Scott, executive director of Healing Hands Health Center in Bristol and chair of the Tri-Cities RAM board of directors. “We served almost 300 more people this year than we did during our first event in 2010, and we’re hoping to increase that number even more next year.”

Tri-Cities RAM will take place again next year, and organizers have tentatively set the date for the first weekend of May 2013, hosted again by the Bristol Motor Speedway.

“I can’t say enough about the generosity of BMS and so many other groups that made this event possible,” said Scott. “Raceway Ministries with their golf carts provided much-needed transportation, and the Southern Baptist Association was there all weekend with their Disaster Relief Mobile Feeding Unit, cooking meals for patients and volunteers alike. This event truly is a community effort, and it’s wonderful to see so many people come together to care for our neighbors.”
