Unicoi County Memorial Hospital seeks caring volunteers

ERWIN, Tenn. – Unicoi County Memorial Hospital is looking for volunteers to fill various roles, from manning the gift shop to providing music for residents in the hospital’s Long Term Care unit.

“A volunteer is often the first person a patient or visitor sees when they walk into the hospital,” said Lynnis Hornsby, corporate director of Volunteers/Auxiliary Resources at Mountain States Health Alliance (MSHA).

“That friendly face can make a world of difference to someone who may be anxious or suffering. If you would like to make a difference in the lives of patients and their friends and families, or just give back to your community, this is the opportunity for you.”

Volunteers generally work three-to-four-hour shifts. Jobs include the gift shop, manning the information desk, playing piano or other musical instruments for the Long-Term Care residents, or acting as a Patient Ambassador.

Particularly in the Long-Term Care unit, residents desire interaction with people – talking, reading to them, helping put lotion on their hands and just basic one-on-one contact.

The gift shops are operated by the not-for-profit Mountain States Auxiliary which donates back to the hospital for specific needs that benefit the patients and their families.
