Notes

Most music fans have a favorite song recorded by two-time GRAMM award-winner Rita Coolidge? “Fever,” “We’re All Alone,” “One Fine Day,” “(Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher & Higher,” “The Way You Do The Things You Do,” “All Time High,” “Superstar,” and so many other memorable tracks that topped the charts from the 1970’s onward. It is perhaps due to Coolidge’s pop and rock pedigree that many of her fans are unaware of her longstanding affection for jazz, however. Her debut release for Concord Records, And So Is Love (CCD-2271-2), a collection of well-loved jazz standards, is sure to change all that. It will also undoubtedly add a few jazz chestnuts to that lengthy list of songs Coolidge has already made her own. For more on Coolidge, go to www.ritacoolidge.com

The Jazz Doctors are the premier straight-ahead jazz group in the region. After establishing longtime national careers of individual performances and recordings, the musicians have been performing as a featured group for the past several years as a group. Critically acclaimed performances have included jazz festivals, special events, and extended club work as the house band and several venues. The performers include Dick Davis on saxophones, Mark Thie on piano, Jerome Heitmann on guitar, Martin Walters on bass, Dr. Rande Sanderbeck on percussion, and Dr. David Champouillon as leader and trumpet / flugelhorn. Their performance can range the gamut of all styles of jazz from straight-ahead jazz to jazz-rock to latin-jazz. The group’s leader, Dr. David Champouillon, is presently a Performing Artist for Bach Trumpets, Professor of Trumpet and Jazz Studies at East Tennessee State University, and Director of the Tri-Cities Jazz Fest. Topalian Jazz Scholar Danny Williams will join the group on several featured selections.
