Niswonger Children’s Hospital, opened in 2009, is the only facility between Knoxville and Roanoke that is a member of the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI), currently serving more than 200,000 children in a four-state, 29-county region. It is the replacement facility for The Children's Hospital at JCMC, which has been the regional leader in pediatric services since 1992. Niswonger Children’s Hospital works in partnership with the ETSU College of Medicine and has more than 20 pediatric subspecialties and 127 physicians on staff. It is one of six national affiliates of the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Niswonger Children’s Hospital offers transport services dedicated to the transfer of critically ill infants and children from referral hospitals. 

Niswonger Children's Hospital has 69 beds and is staffed by people who are dedicated to providing the highest quality health care available for your child. In addition to providing the very best in medical technology and nursing expertise, the facility is staffed with pediatric experts who know, love and care about children and their families.  The goal of Team Members at Niswonger Children's Hospital is to provide safe and child-friendly care that is centered on the patient and the family.

Quiet Time

The Niswonger Children’s hospital has recognized that the hospital environment often has an over abundance of sounds that are cause by anything from telephones to bedside monitors to voices or equipment. Our overall goal is to attempt to decrease noise throughout our facility, and one way we are doing this is through the implementation of quiet time throughout the entire hospital. Literature has demonstrated that providing a specified quiet time throughout the day serves as both a satisfier to patients and families as well at to hospital team members. This time gives a chance for rest that is usually much needed for optimal healing.

Quiet time runs from 1:30 to 2:30 during the afternoon hours. During this time, visitors are asked to be in the rooms or in the waiting areas, lights are dimmed, doors are closed, and procedures are limited to those needed for patient care. Nurses continue to respond to patient needs, but the ancillary services are provided at other times throughout the day.

This is only one of many ways that the Niswonger Children’s Hospital is bringing loving care to healthcare.
