Johnston Memorial Hospital is focused on being an environmentally sustainable facility and follows the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED - Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design - guidelines. JMH earned Gold LEED certification shortly after opening.
LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system, providing third-party verification that a building or community was designed in an environmentally friendly manner, including energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources as well as sensitivity to their impact.
JMH LEED highlights include:
- Open Space - Fifty percent of the project site has been reserved for vegetated open space.
- Water-Efficient Landscaping - Water consumption for landscaping on our campus is 50 percent less than traditional landscape designs in our area. This was achieved through the utilization of native and adapted plant species as well as high-efficiency irrigation equipment.
- "Green" Construction Materials - Eco-friendly, low-emitting materials were used during the construction of the building, including adhesives/sealants, paints/coatings, carpet and composite wood.
- Construction Waste Recycling - more than 75% of the waste materials from the construction of the hospital were diverted from the landfill. These materials included steel/metals, concrete/masonry, clean wood, cardboard and drywall.
- Indoor Air Quality - Through efficient ventilation systems and ongoing monitoring, the quality of the air inside and outside of the building is maintained at a high level to ensure guest comfort and well being. For example, the entire JMH campus is a nonsmoking area.
- Low-Emission Vehicle Parking - Twenty-four parking spaces close to the building have been designated for low-emitting vehicles in an effort to encourage our guests to drive fuel-efficient cars.
- Water Use Reduction - Through the installation of low-flow water closets, urinals, lavatories, showers and kitchen sinks, the facility achieves a water use reduction of 40 percent. These high-efficiency plumbing fixtures are designed to save up to 1.6 million gallons of water per year.
- Energy Efficiency - Efficient heating and cooling systems have been installed. These systems are commissioned by an organization designed to assess energy performance and economic impact.
- Recyclables - Paper, cardboard, plastic and metals are collected in designated areas for recycling.
