You do not plan to visit the emergency department. It just happens, and usually when you least expect it. At Russell County Medical Center, we practice a philosophy of emergency care called ER+, which helps further our goal that you will receive quality medical care as quickly and professionally as possible.
The Emergency Department at Russell County Medical Center is staffed with specially trained physicians, registered nurses and health care personnel 24-hours a day, year round, to provide diagnosis and treatment for illness and injuries.
Patients who come to the Emergency Department have access to:
- 24-hour physician coverage
- A modern ER facility
- Registered nurses who have specialized training and experience
- Important diagnostic services, like radiology, laboratory
- Surgical Services
- Intensive Care
- Inpatient treatment
- Respiratory Therapy
In addition, RCMC has a heliport to accommodate patients who arrive at the hospital by helicopter or who must be transported outside the region for certain types of specialized care.
The staff of RCMC is very involved in the training of Emergency Medical Technicians, Cardiac Technicians and Paramedics in the region and sponsors local educational seminars for the rescue squads.
Dr. Norman Rexrode serves as the Medical Director for the Department and additionally is the EMS Medical Director for Southwest Virginia.

The ER+ goal is for you to have access 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week, to qualified physicians who take the time to listen to what you have to say. You will be greeted warmly by nurses who are truly compassionate and a registration staff that understands that people come before paperwork.
Our team of trained physicians, nurses and technicians are able to provide fast, quality care. They will listen to you, examine you carefully and prescribe a treatment plan that you will understand and believe in.
