Speech Language Pathology

The Speech-Language Pathology Department at Smyth County Community Hospital provides complete diagnostic evaluations, consultations, and treatment for infants, children, and adults with communication disorders.

The speech-language therapists examine and treat problems with:

Speech sound production
Language(comprehension and expression)
Voice
Feeding and Swallowing
Cognition (memory, problem-solving, etc.)
Stroke
Acquired Neurogenic Disorders (such as: MS, ALS & Parkinson's Disease)
Head and Neck Surgery
 

There are many different causes of these problems in both adults and children.  Smyth County Community Hospital speech-language therapists work with adults and children in the hospital, in the speech offices at the Wellness Center or in the patient's home or school if they can't come to the hospital campus, and in Francis Marion Manor Health & Rehabilitation.

Physicians, case managers, caregivers, and other professionals are kept informed of evaluation results and patient progress through formal reports, telephone conversations, and patient care conferences.
