Surgical Services
Surgical Services provided by Smyth County Community Hospital include: GU, Sinuplasty, Ophthalmology, Vascular, Orthopedics, Plastics, GYN, Podiatry, Oral, and General Surgery. Laser Ophthalmology and Refractory procedures are also performed in the OR. Patients are registered through the Pre-admi
ssion Center for pre-testing before any surgery or procedures take place. The Pre-Admission Center was developed to ensure the highest possible level of service to SCCH patient. Under this concept, outpatient surgery and day-of-admission surgery patients register in the Emergency Department (Central Registration) and go directly to the Pre-Admission Center. In the Pre-Admission Center,
a nursing and pre-anesthesia assessment are completed; specimens drawn for the Laboratory; EKG performed; and patient education occurs to let the patient and family know what will take place on the date of surgery and during the patients post-operative stay, whether as an ambulatory surgery patient or as a surgery inpatient. The patient only has to leave the Pre-Admission Center for pre-operative x-ray, if ordered.
The 16-bed Outpatient Surgery Department was developed for patients who are having a short stay surgery or procedure and are able to be sent home following a recovery period at the hospital. Such procedures include surgical procedures lasting less than 90 minutes; blood transfusions; steroid blocks; transrectal ultrasound of prostate; laser surgery for eyes; and kidney stone lithotripsy.
