Preparation for Nuclear Medicine Procedures
Bone Scan
- It is important that you are hydrated prior to this procedure. We encourage you d rink plenty of fluids prior to this examination.
- Bring your physician's order and a list of your current medications
- You will have an injection and return approximately 3 hours later for the scan. You may also eat, drink and take any necessary medications while waiting. Scan takes about 1 hour.
Cardiac Stress Test
- Do not eat or drink after 12:00 midnight of the night of the exam.
- Do not consume any CAFFEINE (no decaf coffee) for 12 hours before the exam.
- You may have small sips of water.
- Dress comfortably with good walking shoes.
- No tobacco use the morning of the appointment.
- This test takes about 4 hours

Hida Scan (Dida)
- Do not eat or drink six (4) hours before exam.
- Hold pain medications for 6 hours before exam. Please consult with your doctor before stopping pain medications.

Gastric Emptying
- Do not eat or drink 4 hours prior to your exam.
- Do not take gastric motility medications for 24 hours prior to your exam unless your physician specifies.
- Cannot have BARIUM 48 hours prior to the exam
- Exam takes about 2 hours
Parathyroid Scan
- No preparation is necessary for this procedure.
- You may be on your thyroid medications if needed for this exam
(This exam takes about 2 1/2 to 3 hours. You will have 2 scans with a 1-2 hour break in between the scans)
Prosthesis Scan
- No preparation is necessary for this procedure.
- This is a 2-day study
Day 1 - you will have blood drawn and it will mixed with an isoptope. You will be able to leave for 4-5 hours. Upon return, you will receive an injection through an IV with the radioisotope mixture.
Day 2 - you will have the first scan called a White Blood Cell Scan, receive an injection of sulfur colloid and return in 1 hour for your second scan which image your bone marrow.
Thyroid Uptake & Scans
- Do not eat or drink four (6) hours before exam
- Your doctor must discontinue Synthyroid medication 4 weeks prior to the exam. For other thyroid medicines, consult the Nuclear Medicine Department by calling our scheduling department at

- You cannot have iodinated contrast (X-ray dye) within 6 weeks prior to your exam
- This is a 2-day scan. On day 1 you will come and take a pill (I-123 Radioactive Iodine) by mouth. You will return in 4 hours for a scan and then again in 24 hours for another scan.
Thyroid Whole Body Scans
- Do not eat or drink two (2) hours before exam
- Your doctor must discontinue Synthyroid medication 4 weeks prior to the exam. For other thyroid medicines, consult the Nuclear Medicine Department by calling our scheduling department at

- No iodinated contrast (x-ray dye) within the last 6 weeks.
- You will be involved with this test over a 2 day period - Day 1 you will take a pill (I-123 Radioactive Iodine) by mouth and return in 24 hours for your scan.
