The Procedure

Ultrasound imaging, also called ultrasound scanning or sonography, involves exposing part of the body to high-frequency sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the body.  Ultrasound exams do not use ionizing radiation. Because ultrasound images are captured in real time, they can show the structure and movement of the body's internal organs, as well as blood flowing through blood vessels.

What are Some Common Uses of the Procedure

  • Examine heart and blood vessels, including the abdominal aorta and its major branches
  • Examine liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, kidneys and bladder
  • Examine uterus, ovaries and unborn child in pregnant patients
  • Examine thyroid and parathyroid glands
  • Guide procedures such as needle biopsies
  • Image the breasts and guide biopsy of breast cysts or masses
  • Diagnose a variety of heart conditions
  • View blockages to blood flow (such as clots) and narrowing of vessels
  • View tumors and congenital malformation

How is an Ultrasound Performed?

  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing for your exam. Remove all clothing and jewelry in the area to be examined.
  • You may be asked to wear a gownFor most ultrasound exams, you will lie face up on a table that can be tilted or moved.

  • A clear gel is applied to the area of the body being studied. The sonographer (ultrasound technologist) or radiologist then presses a transducer firmly against the skin and sweeps it over the area of interest.

  • The exam is usually completed in 30-45 minutes.

  • Sometimes a transvaginal scan needs to be performed for obstetric ultrasounds. This often provides more detailed images of the uterus and ovaries.

The Results

The radiologist will review the images and send a report to your physician.
Our goal is to complete the interpretation within 48 hours of completion of exam.
