CPE Educational Requirements

The following educational requirements must be met:

  • Either graduation from high school/GED or ordination by a faith community or commission to function in ministry by an appropriate religious authority.
  • Preference will also be given to persons with some formal theological education.
  • Licensure or certification in a religious vocation or diaconate or completion of an acceptable lay ministries training course are acceptable.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize a reflective learning model.

The following experience requirements must be met: 

  • Sufficient spiritual and pastoral experience to demonstrate an ability to establish a pastoral relationship.
  • Demonstrated ability to function ecumenically and interdisciplinarily.
  • Demonstrated emotional maturity and stability.
  • Capacity to exercise personal authority and to relate positively to ascribed authority.  Ability to function autonomously and interdependently.
  • Demonstrated maturity of personal faith and a high level of spiritual maturity.
  • Demonstrated ability to function under stressful and conflictual conditions.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Endorsement by a religious faith group to participate in Clinical Pastoral Education.
  • The application will be processed in a timely manner.  The decision on acceptance will be made by the System CPE Supervisor with the consultation and agreement of at least one member of the adjunct faculty.  The student will be notified of the acceptance or rejection of their application no later than three weeks after it is received.
