Gastric Bypass
By creating a small pouch in the stomach where the esophagus comes into the stomach, people undergoing this procedure are limited in the amount they can eat at a meal. The small intestine is also redirected from the bottom of the stomach to the small pouch thus causing malabsorption. The Dumping Syndrome is a common side effect - the rerouting of the intestines limits the amount of sugary and fried foods a person can consume.

Sleeve Gastrectomy (Gastric Sleeve)
Approximately 85 percent of the stomach is removed making the stomach a tube or sleeve. This procedure also limits the amount of food intake.
Gastric Sleeve surgery may be followed by gastric bypass surgery once the patient has lost a significant amount of weight and become healthier. This could be used as a "staged" approach to gastric bypass.

Support Groups
The widespread use of support groups has provided weight loss surgery patients an excellent opportunity to discuss their various personal and professional issues. Most learn, for example, that weight loss surgery will not immediately resolve existing emotional issues or heal the years of damage that morbid obesity might have inflicted on their emotional well-being. Most surgeons who frequently perform weight loss surgery will tell you that ongoing post-surgical support helps produce the greatest level of success for their patients.
