To ensure the highest level of quality training, all of our professional trainers must have an exercise science related degree from an accredited university, a current CPR certification, and hold one of the following fitness professional certifications:

Rex Carpenter, CSCS
Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, National Strength and Conditioning Association
Philosophy: “Strive for progress, not perfection.”

rex carpenterRex holds a bachelor’s degree in human performance and exercise science with an emphasis in coaching from Milligan College. He began working for The Wellness Center in May 2012. Throughout his college career, Rex gained valuable skills in athletics, playing four years and being named captain of the basketball team his senior year. He also worked as an intern at Milligan's Gilliam Wellness Center and has more than two years of strength and conditioning experience. With his experience in weight, endurance, plyometric, and core and stability training,  Rex wants to help you  achieve your health and fitness goals.

Melvin "Buddy" Underwood, CSCS
Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, National Strength and Conditioning Association,
Certified Personal Trainer, American College of Sports Medicine
Philosophy: “I believe everyone can achieve their fitness goals.”

melvin underwoodMelvin holds a bachelor's degree in exercise science from East Tennessee State University and has a certification in personal training through the American College of Sports Medicine.  
 
He began his career at The Wellness Center as an exercise physiologist in cardiac rehab before becoming a personal trainer.  Melvin has also worked as a P.T. Tech at Blue Ridge Physical Therapy which exposed him to a variety of clients and physical conditions.  Melvin enjoys running, hiking, Olympic weight lifting and teaching clients how to live a healthier lifestyle and achieve their personal fitness goals.




Candice Huggins, CSCS

National Strength and Conditioning Association
Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist
Philosophy: “Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.”

candice loveCandice holds a bachelor's degree in exercise science from East Tennessee State University.  She began her fitness career at The Wellness Center in 2008.  Candice has experience in exercise program development that can manage diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension and body weight.  She is also able to work with clients who have completed cardiovascular rehabilitation.  Candice develops programs that focus on improving core strength, balance and general body strength.  She also works with post-orthopedic rehab patients who want to continue with exercise.  Candice works with clients interested in living a healthy and active lifestyle.

Whether you want to run a 5k, a marathon, or improve some aspect of your life, Candice will provide you with a training protocol, motivation and inspiration that will take you through the completion of your goal(s).

Ron Renfro, CSCS
Health Fitness Specialist
Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, National Strength and Conditioning Association
Philosophy: “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.”

ron renfroRon holds a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from East Tennessee State University and a master’s degree in physical education with a concentration in exercise physiology and performance from East Tennessee State University.  He is certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a certified strength and conditioning specialist.  His outside interests include anything related to automobiles and sports, especially football.  He plays semi-pro football for the Knoxville Knights.  In addition to serving as one of the team captains for the Knights, he has been selected to play in four consecutive All-Star games. The Knights won back-to-back league championships in 2008 and 2009.

Ron has 20 years of experience at The Wellness Center and has held many different positions. His experience ranges from training young athletes and preparing them for their specific athletic competitions to working with seniors who are trying to maintain their independence and quality of life.  
 


Steve Pastorek
Head Fitness Specialist

Steve Pastorek is the owner of Foot Rx Running. He served eight years in the National Guard and is a graduate of ETSU.  Steve has been involved with the running community for more than 12 years and is currently serving as a board member for the State of Franklin Track Club.  He has also served on the board for the Boys and Girls Club in Kingsport and is a member of the Kingsport Rotary Club.  Some of his accomplishments include competing in marathons, one of which was the Boston Marathon, and assisting with the organization of race events such as the Bluegrass Half Marathon.  Steve enjoys assisting members and is happy to assist with any questions or concerns.


Emily Vaughan
Exercise Specialist
Philosophy: “If you are not careful, your talent will take you places your character can’t keep you.” – Eric Thomas

Emily graduated with honors in biology with a concentration in marine biology from Old Dominion University in Virginia, where she was a two-sport Division 1 student athlete in varsity swimming and rowing. She has worked for The Wellness Center since December 2013. Emily has valuable experience training athletes as coach of a high school swim team in Norfolk, Va., and for several Johnson City swim club teams for which she also served as a strength training coach. Emily specializes in strength and weight training, running, swimming, rowing and endurance training and is currently pursuing certification as a personal trainer.



Ryan Hall, CSCS
Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, National Strength and Conditioning Association
Philosophy: “You can’t change if you don’t push”

Ryan holds a master’s degree in exercise science from Eastern Michigan University and is certified as a strength and conditioning specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He has worked in the health and fitness industry for more than eight years in positions including cardiac rehab, corporate wellness, sports conditioning, group fitness and personal training. Before moving to East Tennessee, he started and operated an in-home personal training business for four years. He has competed in several half marathons, triathlons, duathlons and the Houston Marathon. Ryan’s personal interests are weightlifting, running, mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, downhill skiing and any outdoor activity that keeps him moving. 

Currently he works with the Families for a Healthier Eastman group whose mission is to bring healthy and active ideas to Eastman families, as well as to residents of Kingsport and the surrounding areas. Ryan specializes in circuit training, free weights, strength and conditioning, teaching proper form and technique, and helping clients meet their fitness and weight loss goals. He enjoys working with clients of varying levels of exercise and workout experience.
