Cosmetic
surgery refers to operations that seek to enhance a person’s
physical appearance. Cosmetic surgery procedures may be performed
on any part of the body—from nose reconstruction to feet reconstruction,
and everywhere in between. According to the American Society for
Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), approximately 7 million Americans
had some type of cosmetic procedure in 2002 and nearly 1 million
underwent cosmetic surgery. With the new trend in televising plastic
surgery-based “makeovers” and with more and more innovations
in the field, that number has surely risen.
Cosmetic surgery is intended
to reshape the natural, normal body for the sole reason of improving
physical appearance. But, there’s
a major difference between this type of surgery and reconstructive
surgery. Reconstructive surgery attempts to fix abnormalities on
the body caused by trauma and accident, birth defects, tumors or
other medical surgeries. Cosmetic surgery is a viable option for
many women who are unhappy with their appearance. It’s always
important to strengthen body
image and overall body health before
seeking a surgical alternative.
