The pelvic exam is performed at your annual well-woman gynecological exam in order to examine the vulva, cervix, vagina, ovaries and rectum to detect any abnormalities such as cysts, tumors or infections. Your provider will examine the external appearance of your genitals, looking for abnormalities such as sores, lumps and discoloration. Next, your provider will look at the inside of your vagina with the help of a speculum. Your provider will also insert two gloved fingers into your vagina while pressing on your abdomen to examine your uterus and ovaries. You should have an annual pelvic exam once a year after you become sexually active or turn 21.
