Most fetuses end up with their heads facing down, ready for delivery. This is called vertex position. Some babies, however, do not arrange themselves in vertex, and this is called breech. Breech position is usually characterized by a fetus whose buttocks is positioned to come out first, with the feet near the head. The legs may also be folded at the knees or stretched out below the buttocks. In any of these breech positions, delivery becomes more complicated. Breech birth is uncommon, and is usually done by cesarean section.
