Date rape is a serious problem among teens and is the most common form of rape. Date rape means being forced to have sex with somebody against your will, and that somebody is your friend, acquaintance or boyfriend. Often times date rape will happen on a “date” or with a boy who you are slightly romantically involved with. Say you are at a party with a really cute guy, or you have gone out to dinner. After you flirt a little, he takes you to a private place and you might kiss a little, or a lot. Then he pressures you to have sex and after you refuse, he forces you instead of pulling back. This is a common example of what happens with date rape, although there are other types of date rape situations as well.

Perhaps you have heard of the “date rape drug,” or "roofies." This comes from the word Rohypnol, which is a sedative that makes you black out and have no control over your body. Roofies are sometimes put into girls’ drinks at bars or at parties. The pill dissolves and has no taste, so you will never know it’s there. Within twenty minutes, the roofie will take effect. This will make it much easier for an acquaintance or a stranger to violate you. It is very important to keep a close eye on everything you drink and eat. That means not leaving your drinks unattended or asking a stranger to hold your glass while you go to the bathroom.
