Infertility,
which is the inability to conceive and carry out a pregnancy after
having been off any form of contraception for six months to a year,
affects 10 to 25 percent of American couples of reproductive age.
It is a condition of the reproductive system that affects both men
and women. About 60 percent of all infertility cases are diagnosed
in women, but 40 percent are diagnosed in men. If you and your partner
are having difficulty conceiving, many factors could be causing the
problems. Most professionals will not even test for infertility unless
a couple has been trying to conceive for six months to a year. If
you’re over 35, have been trying for more than six months to
conceive, have a history of medical problems, menstrual problems
or multiple miscarriages, you may want to see your provider for fertility
testing. If you or your partner have already been diagnosed with
infertility, you may be considering many treatment
options. Remember,
just because you are diagnosed as infertile, doesn’t mean you
can’t become pregnant. About 85 to 95 percent of couples diagnosed
with infertility become pregnant within a year. |
